Setting Emissions Targets

The Freeport Town Council recently adopted targets to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in line with neighboring communities and the international climate agreement, as recommended by the Freeport Sustainability Advisory Board (FSAB).

These targets will help guide the Town’s efforts to minimize its contribution to climate change, serving as benchmarks to measure progress and establish long-term commitments.

The targets for the wider community are to reduce emissions by 65% by 2030, 85% by 2040, and achieve net zero emissions by 2050. For municipal operations, the target is to reach net zero emissions by 2040.

While aspirational, these targets reflect the town's commitment towards a sustainable future and will help make the Climate Action Plan more data-driven.
