Getting Outdoors
There are over 1,200 acres of open space in Freeport, owned privately, by non-profit organizations, by homeowners’ associations, and public entities such as the State and the Town. The spaces open to the public provide opportunities to hike, swim, bike, camp, skate, snowmobile, picnic, and boat through the provision of public water access points. This page provides a list and description of some of Freeport’s natural resources that are open to the public and we invite residents and guests to explore and enjoy these open spaces.
The Freeport Conservation Trust, a non-profit organization independent from the Town of Freeport, also has many properties under management with public trails. Their website offers maps, descriptions, and background information on their lands and other public properties, including the following:
- East Freeport: Brimstone Hill Trail, Antoinette Jackman Trail, Kelsey Brook Trail, Bessies Trail, Calderwood Trails
- South Freeport Trail Map (PDF): Bliss Woods Trail, Stonewood Trail, Sayles Field, Ridge Trail
- Cousins River: Cousins River Trail, Powell Point Trail
The Town of Freeport owns the following properties, which are managed by the Freeport Conservation Commission:
- Hedgehog Mountain (PDF) is a wooded trail preserve off the Pownal Road.
- Hidden Pond (PDF) is a preserve off Grant Road.
- The North Freeport trail map details trails on both Hidden Pond and around town property off Wardtown Road at the old Florida Lake (PDF) location.
- Quarry Woods is off the Lower Mast Landing Road (PDF)

- Winslow Memorial Park Campground offers:
- 100 campsites and wooded trails with views of the Harbor and Casco Bay;
- Rental picnic shelters for reunions, company picnics, weddings, etc.;
- Picnic tables, grills and a tidal beach;
- A boat launch for anything from trailered boats to canoes and kayaks;
- A Summer concert series with local bands
- Playground
- Bow Street / Memorial Park Corner of Bow Street and Park Street
- Leon Gorman Park is located on Bow Street; has limited parking off School Street and Bow Street
- West Street Park / Memorial Park is at the corner of Main Street and West Street
- Wolfe's Neck Woods State Park is a five minute drive from the center of Freeport's bustling shopping district, and as visitors approach the park, marshes and open fields provide a tranquil transformation back to nature. In 1969, this area of more than 200 acres was given to the State by Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence M.C. Smith of Freeport. The park contains varied ecosystems, including climax white pine and hemlock forests, a salt marsh estuary, and the rocky shorelines on Casco Bay and the Harraseeket River. - Winslow Park Campground, a town-owned property on Casco Bay that features both daytime recreation and camping opportunities.
- Wolfe's Neck Oceanfront Camping, a campground on the Bay associated with Wolfe's Neck Farm.
- Dunning Boat Yard/Porter's Landing Right-of-Way - Owned by the Town, available for canoe and kayak access; boat launch with severe tidal limitations
- Cove Road - Small launch area, walkway, and floats for hand-carried boats; parking area. Owned by the Town, including easement right granted to the Town for public access to the shore with conditions for use.
- Town Dock - Wharf area with limited parking, dinghy tie-up for residents; short-term boat tie-ups for residents and non-residents; and a lightweight hoist available for use.
- Winslow Park Boat Ramp - Ramp usable only at high tide; fee charged.
- Mill Stream Boat Launch - Launch area for canoes and kayaks; parking for three to five cars; owned by the Freeport Conservation Trust.
- Sandy Beach - a 495 foot wide beach area with tidal access, reached by steps down a steep slope; parking for four vehicles.
- Little River - a launch area for canoes and kayaks; parking for 4-5 vehicles
- Old County Road - also for canoes and kayaks; limited parking across the street
Beaches
(no lifeguards / at your own risk)
- Winslow Memorial Park - a tidal beach
- Sandy Beach - a 495 foot wide beach area with tidal access, reached by steps down a steep slope; parking for four vehicles. Located at the corner of Sandy Beach Road and Cliff Avenue.
- Snowmobiling trail maps are available for purchase at the Finance Office in Town Hall on 30 Main Street.
- Hunter Road Fields and Trails Project
- This field complex features various ball fields, multipurpose fields and walking trails. It was opened on July 7, 2012. For more details and reservation/use policy, Please visit the Hunter Road Fields page.
- Pownal Road Fields and Playground
- These fields are located on Pownal Road, adjacent to the intersection with Hedgehog Mountain Road.
