Business Licensing
- Freeport Businesses may file with Division of Corporations, UCC and Commissions as one of the following:
Business Corporations
Nonprofit Corporations
Limited Partnerships
Limited Liability Companies
Limited Liability Partnerships
General Partnerships
- Businesses not registered as one of the above shall either file a Sole Proprietorship or a Partnership filing with the Town Clerk's Office for a $10 filing fee.

Cannabis Licensing
The following categories of Cannabis Establishment licenses are now available for submission pursuant to Chapter 66, Cannabis Establishment Licensing Ordinance, adopted February 6, 2024.

Applications are available in the Clerk’s Office, 30 Main Street, Freeport, Me.
Commercial Passenger Boats
Application for licenses under this ordinance must be received in the office of the Town Clerk on a regular town office business day during the following periods of each year: (a) December 1 through December 7 for applications from Freeport Applicants; and (b) December 8 through December 15 for applications from Non-resident Applicants.
Dogs
- Dogs six months and older are required to be licensed. It’s the law.
- Online dog registration is available from October 15th to January 31st of each year. You may register your dog on the State Website and Animal Welfare will mail the dog tag to you, or;
- New dog licenses can also be obtained at the Town Clerk’s office during regular business hours. Please bring proof of the rabies vaccination and spay/neutering. The cost at Town Hall is $6 and $11, respectively.
All dog licenses expire December 31st of each year. You may renew your dog license anytime between October 15th and January 31st. You must renew your dog license no later than January 31st of each year, or a late fee ($25) will be charged per dog. The Town Clerk is not authorized to waive the late fee, as it is a State imposed fee.
Rabies clinics are also held several times a year at Coastal Humane Society, Tractor Supply and Petco in Brunswick. For dates and more information for Coastal Humane Society, call them at 725-5051 or visit them at their website.
Food Trucks
- Food Truck permits may be issued for 3 consecutive days for $50 or for a full year for $200.

Liquor Licensing
- Access BELLS-Maine Bureau of Alcohol Licensing Portal for submission of all Liquor License applications. The Town of Freeport must endorse On Premise, Catering, and BYOB Liquor License applications online before submission to the Bureau of Alcoholic Beverages and Lottery Operations.
- There is a $100 municipal fee for New Liquor Licenses, a $60 fee for Renewal On Premise Liquor Licenses, and a $10 fee for Catering and BYOB Permits. Municipal fees must be paid in addition to the applicable State fees.

Public Peddler
- The annual application period occurs in January. According to Town Ordinance, applications for new Public Peddler Licenses are open to residents Jan. 16, 2026, to Jan. 23, 2026, and are open to non-residents Jan. 24, 2026, to Jan. 31, 2026. Applications are available online and in the Town Clerk’s Office. Unissued Licenses can be issued following the normal renewal period. Contact the Clerk's Office for details.

Shellfish Licenses
- Resident Recreational License application (PDF) $16.00
- 3 Day Non-Resident License application (DOCX) $20.00
- Pay online for Shellfish License
Print and complete the Shellfish License application. Return to Town Hall in person or as an email attachment. Submit the fee using the Pay Online option above. The Shellfish license will be mailed once payment is processed the next business day. Email form to Town Clerk. Shellfish licensing period runs July 1st to June 30th each year.
Short Term Rentals
On April 27, 2021 the Freeport Town Council adopted an ordinance regulating the short-term rental of residential properties. The ordinance application form can be accessed below. The application and self-inspection checklist will be available below by the week beginning May 3, 2021. The fee is $100 per application. Checks should be made payable to the Town of Freeport.

Chapter 61: Short-Term Rental Registration Ordinance (PDF)
New: Online submission option and payment option for Renewals (only). New applications must be submitted directly to the Clerk's Office for first time review. Additional information is needed on initial application. The online process is for renewals only.
You will need to provide a copy of your Property Deed. If you cannot find a copy you may access it at the Cumberland County Registry of Deeds.
