Posted Road Permit Guidelines
Purpose:
In order to prevent damage, each spring many Town roads are posted, limiting heavy loads from traveling along specified Town roads.
Posted roads are in effect starting February 23, 2026.
Dependent on weather and road conditions, permits may be issued allowing heavy vehicles to travel along these roads. In order to obtain a permit to operate a heavy vehicle on a posted Town Way, a permit process has been established which is detailed below.

Guidelines:
All heavy vehicles are required to attain a permit to operate on a posted road in Freeport regardless of temperature. In order to receive a Posted Road Permit, applicants must first complete an Application For Permit To Operate On a Posted Way (PDF). These applications are available at the Department of Public Works at 7 Hunter Rd. on Monday – Thursday from 7:00am-4:30pm. Applications are also available at the Public Safety Building at 16 Main St. on Friday, Saturday and Sunday from 8:00am-4:00pm. Completed forms must be submitted to the Director of Public Works , or his designee, for approval.
Permits will be issued at the discretion of the Director of Public Works based on forecasted weather conditions, temperatures, and road conditions. The issuance of a permit may be denied if the Director of Public Works determines the proposed use could reasonably harm or cause damage to the Town Way.
The Town of Freeport reserves the right to rescind permits due to changes in weather and road conditions.
The permit to be issued is only for the vehicle owner or operator.
Permits will be issued no earlier than 7:00pm, the evening prior to the effective date of the permit.
Permits will be issued for time periods not to exceed twenty-four (24) hours.
The cost of each permit is $20.00, which must be paid for at the time the permit is issued.
No Permits will be issued:
When road temperatures exceed 32 degrees Fahrenheit, nor when the pavement is wet or when it is snowing.
Other Conditions:
Permitted vehicles may be required to reduce the weight of loads.
It will be unlawful for any vehicle exceeding the gross weight of 23,000 pounds to pass over posted Town roads anytime without a posted road permit. Any vehicles exceeding weight limits traveling during this period must have written permission from the Director of Public Works or his designee unless other arrangements have been made.
Permittee Responsibilities/Damage:
If the Director of Public Works has evidence that the permittee has caused damage to the roads, the permittee will be responsible for providing the full cost to repair the damage. No future permits will be issued until this damage is fully repaired.
