Questions, Complaints, Commendations
The Freeport Police Department is committed to providing the best possible police service. Citizen cooperation and input is essential to achieving this goal. If you have a question about any specific action taken by the department or any of its members, or if you have a recommendation on how we can improve police services, we want to hear from you.
Questions
- If you have a question for the Chief of Police, please send the Chief an email.
Complaints
- Include as much information as possible.
- Once a complaint is received you will be issued a receipt. Your contact information is important so the investigator can follow up with you.
- All completed forms are given to the Chief of Police, who will assign an investigator or investigate it him/her self.
- You will receive an update within 30 days, by phone, email or written.
- All complaints will be investigated, including anonymous ones.
Ways to File a Complaint:
- Online: Submit a Police / Citizen Complaint Form
- In writing: Blank forms can be found at the Public Safety Building (16 Main Street) and Town Hall (30 Main Street).
- By phone or in person: Call (207) 865-4800, or visit the Public Safety Building (16 Main Street) to meet with Chief of Police or Duty Shift Commander.
- In person: At Town Hall (30 Main Street) with the Town Manager.
Disposition of Complaints:
- Unfounded: incident did not occur or officer not involved.
- Exonerated: incident occurred but officer acted lawfully.
- Not sustained: insufficient evidence to prove or disprove the allegation.
- Sustained: allegation is supported by sufficient evidence and disciplinary action is recommended.
Commendations
If you want to commend the work of a Freeport Police Officer, please submit a Commendation Form or write a letter to the Chief of Police.
Commendations will result in the employee being advised of your kindness and a permanent record placed in personnel file.
