LIBRARY DIRECTOR

The Town of Freeport, Maine (pop. 8,737) is seeking a community-oriented leader to be its next  Library Director. Freeport is a desirable residential community, as well as one of Maine’s leading tourist destinations with millions of annual visits to its vibrant businesses including the world-famous retailer L.L. Bean. Known for its coastal and recreational amenities, Freeport is conveniently located 20 miles north of Portland, Maine’s largest city.  

The Director is responsible for the daily operation of the library, including policy and program development and implementation; management of an annual budget of approximately $600,000; and supervision of both full and part-time staff. The Library Director must be able to work within the political and social structures of the community and to communicate effectively with staff and town management. The Library Director is appointed by the Town Manager, confirmed by the seven (7) member Town Council, and will report to the Assistant Town Manager. 

Candidates should possess strong leadership skills, as well as extensive knowledge of current best practices in library management, policies, and standards. The ideal candidate will not only have the technical and managerial skills of a director, but will be equally accomplished in building connections with staff, patrons, the community, and other stakeholders.

Candidates must have a minimum of 5 years of experience in library operations, including internal administration and development activities. Graduation from an accredited college or university required, with a Master’s degree in Library Science or related field from an accredited college or university strongly preferred. Candidates demonstrating an equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered for the position.

Counter Clerk

Freeport is accepting applications for this full-time 37.5 hour, Monday-Thursday position. Responsibilities include but are not limited to assisting customers with motor vehicle registrations, IFW registrations/licenses, property tax payments and other duties as needed.  Position also completes reports for State BMV and IF&W. 

Requirements: Knowledge of, or ability to learn rules and regulations related to BMV processes, and/or experience with BMV and IF&W processes and procedures, and cash handling are required. Direct customer service experience is preferred.  Ability to work independently and communicate effectively both orally and in writing, with internal and external customers is desired.  Must complete Maine State BMV New Registration training and receive certification within six (6) months of hire.  Offers of employment are contingent upon the completion of satisfactory criminal background and credit checks.

Recycling Center Attendant

The Town of Freeport is seeking a full-time Recycling Center Attendant to join our friendly, customer-service focused team. 

We are seeking individuals that are motivated self-starters who can work independently as well as with a team. The successful candidate will be friendly and approachable with exceptional customer service skills. Applicants must be at least 18 years of age with a high school diploma or equivalent credential. Previous experience in municipal Transfer Station/Recycling Center services is preferred.

This vacancy is for a 32 hour/week position, Wednesday to Saturday. The Town offers a generous benefit package that includes Medical, Dental, Short-Term Disability and Life Insurance, as well as Retirement, Vacation, and Sick Leave.

FIRE/RESCUE DEPARTMENT SHIFT CAPTAIN

The Town of Freeport is seeking qualified professionals to join our full-time supervisory team at the Freeport Fire/Rescue Department in the positions of Shift Captain. These positions will be responsible for the direct delivery of firefighting and EMS services and will provide shift leadership and supervision under a command structure answering to the Chief Officers of the department. As shift supervisors, candidates are expected to lead an assigned 24-hour shift in the daily activities of equipment readiness, station maintenance and training. Shift supervisors will typically be part of a crew of four front line responders assigned each day.

Typical shifts begin at 0700 hours and are 24 hours on, 24 hours off, 24 hours on, followed by 5 days off, for an average work week of 42 hours. Candidates are expected to work any weekends, holidays, and nights that fall within their assigned shifts on this eight-day rotation. There is the potential for call and/or overtime work on an occasional basis. 

Applicants must at a minimum possess a valid Maine class C or higher commercial driver’s license. A Maine EMS Advanced EMT license, and Maine FF1 and FF2 certification or equivalent are preferred. A Maine EMS Paramedic’s license is preferred. Candidates who currently possess a Basic EMT license, who intend to increase their licensing level to an Advanced EMT license within one year may be considered for the position(s).

Other requirements include; but are not limited to:
Minimum 5 years of EMS/firefighter experience.
Successful completion of a Hazardous Materials Awareness class
Effective supervisory skills, supervisory experience a plus
Successful completion of ICS 100, 200, & 700 classes
Current certification in ICS 300, or ability to acquire

PUBLIC WORKS - EQUIPMENT OPERATOR

The Freeport Public Works Department has an opening for a full time Public Works employee: Preferred candidates will have experience with the operation of light trucks and small construction-related motorized equipment. Experience in snow plowing operations is a plus. Applicants must have a valid Maine CDL driver's license.  Applicants with interest in becoming a CDL driver are encouraged to apply.

The Town offers a competitive pay and benefits package based on qualifications and experience. Our work schedule is Monday thru Thursday from 6:00 am to 4:30 pm. Must be available for additional hours during wintertime operations.

Transfer Station Attendant – Backup Saturday Position 9:00 – 4:00.

The Town of Freeport has an opening for a backup Saturday position at the Transfer Station.  The job involves providing direction to the public on proper waste disposal and recycling.  No experience is necessary.  Must be at least 18 years old.  High School diploma or equivalent required.

This position is not benefit eligible.

The ideal candidate will:

Have a positive attitude with excellent customer service skills
Be able to work outdoors, standing in all types of weather (20% inside 80% outside)
Comfortable using a computer and cash register
Want to work in a fast paced, team environment
