The Freeport Public Works Department is seeking a full-time Laborer to support the safe, efficient, and customer-friendly operation of the Town’s solid waste and recycling facility.
Ideal candidates are motivated self-starters who can work independently and as part of a team. Strong customer service skills and a friendly, approachable demeanor are essential. Preferred qualifications include:
- Experience operating light trucks and small motorized equipment
- Prior work in a municipal transfer station or recycling center environment
- Must be at least 18 years old with a high school diploma or equivalent
Position Responsibilities:
- Assist residents and businesses with proper disposal and recycling procedures
- Maintain cleanliness and safety throughout the facility
- Operate light trucks and small equipment as needed
- Work independently and cooperatively with team members
- Support compliance with environmental and safety regulations
Job Details:
- Schedule: Wednesday - Saturday, 6:00am to 4:30pm, 40 hours/week
- Starting Pay: $21.12/hour
- Department: Public Works

The Town of Freeport is currently seeking applications for per-diem Firefighters with ALS Licensing. This is a skilled Firefighting and EMS position consisting of ALS responsibilities, both emergency and non-emergency, as well as combating, extinguishing, and preventing fires. Work involves responding to a wide range of fire suppression and medical emergencies to ensure the stability and safety of our community.
Per-diem employees are expected to schedule a minimum of four shifts per month. Typical shifts begin at 0700 hours and are 12-24 hours.
Position Requirements:
- High School Diploma or equivalent.
- Must possess and maintain a valid State of Maine Class C operator's license.
- Must have a current state of Maine EMS Advance or Paramedic license.
- State of Maine Firefighter 1 & 2 certification.
- Must successfully complete a comprehensive background check and a post-offer physical exam.
The starting pay for this position is $26.75 -$29.35/hr and is commensurate with experience. The Town of Freeport is hiring a full-time Mechanic/Equipment Operator. We’re looking for a skilled, dependable individual with strong mechanical aptitude and a commitment to public service. This hands-on role involves the repair and maintenance of a variety of public vehicles and equipment, including automobiles, light and heavy trucks, and specialized public works equipment. The Mechanic is also responsible for snow plowing in the winter and assisting with Public Works projects as needed.
Key Responsibilities:
- Perform repairs and scheduled maintenance on all Town vehicles and equipment, including Public Works, Police, and Fire and Rescue vehicles
- Diagnose mechanical defects and road test equipment to verify repairs
- Respond to field calls for equipment repair or towing
- Operate mechanical tools and equipment such as grinders, drill presses, testing and welding tools
- Schedule repairs, order and pick up parts, and maintain inventory of tools and supplies
- Maintain accurate records of repairs and maintenance
- Assist Public Works crew with seasonal activities such as road repair, snow plowing, and building maintenance as needed
Position Requirements:
- High school diploma, vocational school, or equivalent; or any equivalent combination of experience and training
- Considerable experience as an automotive mechanic, especially with heavy equipment and welding
- Valid Maine Class B driver’s license (Class A preferred)
- State Vehicle Inspection Certification
- Must pass a pre-employment physical and drug/alcohol screening; must be able to pass an equipment and driving test to be administered by the Public Works Director or their designee
Job Details:
- Schedule: Monday - Thursday, 6:00am to 4:30pm
- Must be available for additional hours during wintertime operations
- Starting Pay: $28.30/hour, commensurate with experience
- $350 monthly wintertime plowing bonus
- Department: Public Works
