GETTING MARRIED IN MAINE:

Marriage Information

If you are getting married in Maine, the filing of your marriage intentions is the first step in the marriage license process. Maine residents may file their marriage intentions in the municipality that either party resides. If you are not a Maine resident, you may file your intentions in any Maine municipality.

If this is not your first marriage, we MUST be provided with a certified copy, not photocopy, of a document showing how the last marriage ended (i.e. certified divorce decree or certified death certificate).

If you are mailing the intentions to our office, please have both parties sign them in front of a Notary Public before sending.

It will save you time in the Clerk’s Office to have the intentions filled out before arriving as there is a lot of information that needs to be provided.

Your marriage license is valid for 90 days.  The fee for the license is $40 and does NOT include a certified copy after the license is filed in our office.  Once your license is returned by the Officiant, you may purchase a certified copy for a fee of $15 for one copy and $6 for any additional copies acquired at the same time.

The Officiant will be provided with instructions on how to correctly complete their portion of the marriage license.  Please make sure they are provided with this document.  It will hold up the entire process if the license is rejected and needs to be returned to the Officiant to be completed accurately.
