Joint Statement of the Freeport Police Department and Town Leadership

June 1, 2020

“The leadership of the Freeport Police Department and the Town of Freeport are strongly committed to the equal and fair treatment of everyone in our community, regardless of the differences among us.

We have watched with great concern some of the recent acts of violence and discrimination against people of color across the nation, including the murder of George Floyd while in police custody in Minneapolis. We join those around the nation who have been rightfully shocked and angry as they have watched these events unfold. We are committed to ensuring that tragic events like these do not take place in our town and that all people, and specifically people of color, feel safe and protected in our community.

Let us be clear - discrimination of any kind, especially racial discrimination, will not be tolerated in our town. We ask all of our employees, as well as our residents, to speak out if they witness acts of discrimination within our community.”

Jointly Issued,

Susan Nourse, Chief of Police

John Egan, Chair, Town Council

Tawni Whitney, Vice Chair, Town Council

Peter Joseph, Town Manager
