Climate Action Plan

Work on our Climate Action Plan is underway!

The Town has partnered with the Greater Portland Council of Governments (GPCOG) to develop Freeport’s first Climate Action Plan. Freeport's Climate Action Plan will be a data-driven, actionable roadmap to reduce our contribution of polluting emissions while supporting a safe, healthy, and thriving community and environment.

The Freeport Sustainability Advisory Board has been engaging the community in developing strategies and has created a final draft Plan that will be presented to Town Council for consideration in the coming months.

Tentatively, the Plan will be announced at the April 2nd Council meeting and there will be a more in-depth workshop with Council their second meeting in April.

We invite you to explore the Draft Plan!

DIVE INTO THE DETAILS
Data which helped shape our baseline knowledge can be found in the appendices. This includes an Implementation Table (all the proposed actions with more detail), the Greenhouse Gas Inventory report (data on where emissions come from in Freeport), the Streetlight Transportation Analysis (more data on transportation patterns and emissions), and the Vulnerability Assessment (our risks to climate impacts).

What is a Climate Action Plan?

Municipalities can use Climate Action Plans to inform decisions, prioritize actions to take, and track progress towards their goals. Municipalities often include strategic goals for reducing emissions and enhancing resilience in their Climate Plans. By embarking in this effort, Freeport is joining many neighboring towns that have Climate Plans. The state of Maine has a Climate Action Plan that can be found here.
